Make it Right House South Facade

Make it Right House South Facade

Rebuilding Community

This house was designed as part of the rebuilding effort in post-Katrina New Orleans, spearheaded by Brad Pitt's Make it Right Foundation. I was fortunate to be a part of the team tasked to work on the design for affordable housing in the city's devastated Lower 9th Ward. The design references the New Orleans shotgun house but adapts the ideas of outdoor shading, porch, and entry. The roof form shades the entry and functions as a water catchment device.

From House to Home

The original design was a single-story home. However, the new owners receiving the home needed a larger space than the initial design afforded. We needed to adapt the design to reflect the culture and living style of the recipient family. The section model below of the Make It Right house was created as a presentation aid to show the contractors how the west end of the house would be framed differently for the two-story scheme. Construction was completed in August 2009.
